Why Dreams & Jobs Exists
Life is too short to spend it doing work that makes you miserable.
We spend an extraordinary amount of our lives working.
Over a working lifetime, it can add up to around 75,000 hours.
I don’t believe every day at work should be wonderful. Work is still work. There will be pressure, boring days, difficult people, and things we’d rather not do.
But on balance, I believe work should give you more than it takes from you.
It should suit something in you.
75,000 HOURS
A working lifetime.
It’s worth thinking carefully about how you spend it.
There is no perfect job.
Because everyone wants something different from work.
Some people want freedom.
Some want security.
Some want to build things. Some want to help people. Some want status, responsibility, or mastery.
Some want to earn as much as possible.
Some simply want work they enjoy enough, with a life they love outside it.
None of those answers is wrong.
The mistake is assuming that the same career will make everybody happy.
A job that energises one person can slowly drain another.
The question isn’t: what’s the best job?
It’s: what’s the best kind of work for you?

Why I care
I’ve been fascinated by this for most of my working life.
I’m Frank McCaughey, founder of Dreams & Jobs.
I’ve spent more than 25 years building businesses, working in marketing and growth, advising founders, and helping companies grow.
I built a marketing business from scratch, grew it to 100 people with offices in the US and Europe, won multiple awards, and eventually sold it.
But throughout my own career, I’ve also been trying to understand something much more personal:
Why does some work make us come alive while other work slowly switches us off?
I’ve experienced both.
I’ve had periods when I couldn’t wait to get stuck into what I was doing, and others when work felt like something I was simply getting through.
Very often, the difference wasn’t whether the job was objectively good.
It was whether the work suited who I was.
That idea eventually became Dreams & Jobs.

Trying to decide what to study.

Wondering whether you chose the right career.
At 17 or 18, we ask people to make one of the biggest decisions of their lives when they barely know what working life feels like.
Years later, plenty of us are still asking the same question from the other direction.
Is this really what I want to spend my life doing?
We think people deserve better information before making those decisions.
That is why Dreams & Jobs exists.
Our mission is simple:
To help more people find work — and study — that they actually enjoy.
We want to understand what interests you.
What gives you energy.
How you naturally like to work.
What motivates you.
What drains you.
And what you need from an ordinary week.
Then we connect that understanding to something useful:
Real courses.
Real careers.
Real jobs.
Not a label.
Not a verdict.
A better map.
Because if we can improve someone’s chances of finding work that suits them — even by a little — that matters.
A small improvement multiplied across 75,000 hours isn’t actually very small.

We’re still learning too.
We want The Compass to keep getting better.
Better questions. Better insights. Better recommendations.
And the most valuable thing we can get is feedback from the people actually using it.
If something feels incredibly accurate, tell us.
If something feels completely wrong, definitely tell us.
If a question is confusing or a recommendation doesn’t make sense, we want to know that too.
We don’t want to build a test that simply sounds clever.
We want to build something that genuinely helps.
If we’re wrong, tell us. That’s how this gets better.
